Local power is on the ballot in Texas today
Texas voters are casting their ballots that will decide the balance of power in cities and school boards across the state today.
It’s election day in the Lone Star State today and Texans can cast their ballots until polls close at 7:00 pm tonight. The Uniform General Election takes place in Texas every two years where voters get to decide who will represent them for city council, mayor, and school board.
Who is eligible to vote?
In the State of Texas, only U.S. citizens who were registered to vote before the registration deadline thirty days ago are eligible to vote. If you have moved within the same county but did not update your voter registration, you may be allowed to vote with a provisional ballot.
What do I need to vote?
While the Texas Legislature is currently debating bills that would increase barriers to vote, for this election Texas residents will only need a valid photo ID (such as a Driver License, state ID, military ID, or passport, no student IDs) to vote.
Key races to watch in South Texas:
The San Antonio mayoral election will be one to watch, with a whopping 27 candidates running to replace term-limited incumbent Ron Nirenberg. This race will likely go to a runoff, with polls showing a Republican Rolando Pablos may make it to the second round of voting.
Starbase incorporation election in Cameron County. Voters who live near Boca Chica Beach will decide today whether they will incorporate as a new SpaceX company-town named Starbase, Texas. The land SpaceX occupies is currently governed by Cameron County.
The Eagle Pass mayoral election will be another race that South Texans should pay attention to since the political landscape has been shifting in the region for several years.
The Star will watch these races closely and post results across our social media accounts this evening. Follow us on Bluesky, Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter to stay up-to-date!
